The journey from Myrdal to Flam isn’t that long as the distance is just a little over 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) with the train taking around 50 minutes to complete the trip. When going down the mountain from Myrdal to Flam, the best views are on the left side of the train for about 90% of the journey. The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) — part of the Bergen Railway connecting Oslo to Bergen — runs about 20 kilometres through the mountainous Flåmsdalen valley, replete with views of trickling waterfalls, little wooden farmhouses and rugged peaks. The railway begins in Flam and ends in southern Myrdal. Riding on Flåmsbana is a must if you visit the Flam area – and arguably if you visit Norway, in general. The Flam, Norway train journey lasts around 60 blissful minutes and takes passengers through 20 tunnels, across 20 kilometers, and over 860 meters in elevation differences.

The Norway in a Nutshell trip gets really busy. So a good tip if you are doing the trip independently is to check out the Norway in a Nutshell timetable and avoid the trains they use – we had a carriage almost to ourselves on the Myrdal–Flam route by doing this!

My wife and I (both aged 66) are planning to do a Sognefjord boat tour departing from Flam 11:00 and returning there 16:50. We then take the 17:25 Flam Railway to arrive at Myrdal 18:17.

We then take the 17:25 Flam Railway to arrive at Myrdal 18:17. The trouble is, the train for our next destination Bergen does not leave Myrdal until 20:47, so we would have to kill 2 hours and a half.
